Better Homes and Gardens (1-year) Reviews

I have been a fan and subscriber of bhg for years, but the advertising has increased to the point of excess. I took the time to actually count the ads in the last two issues. They totaled more that 62% of the magazine, and that didn’t include the postcard inserts or bhg’s advertising of exclusive products. I’m tired of wading through all of the ads trying to find the magazine. I’m cancelling my subscription in favor of magazines with less advertising and better layout.

Better Homes and Gardens is really about easy living. Each issue includes articles about friends and family, gardening, interior design, building, family matters, food, health, and shopping. This is the magazine I reach for between work and errands because the articles are easy to read and brief yet interesting and inspiring. A few feature examples: window box herbs, dieting myths, cooking scones, what’s new in family cars, and more. Better Homes also emphasizes family by incorporating activities for children or for the whole family from season to season. Better Homes is a good magazine for holiday ideas, too, with recipes and crafts to decorate your home and enjoy with your children. Although there are more sophisticated home magazines out there, I’m glad I have Better Homes lying around when I have a minute to relax.

This is another thing I bought from this seller that has been a great buy! The herbs I’m growing are healthy and taste amazing. For under 15 bucks, I’m surprised at how great this herb garden is. I would definitely recommend it above other more expensive ones even! I have more than enough fresh herbs for cooking, and multiple people have commented on how pretty the little garden is when they come over. It grows right on my kitchen windowsill and looks so nice in the little container that came with it! Thanks again, I’ll be back!!

This was fun and easy to plant in the beautiful pots! Within days, the plants had germinated and I had sprouts! I also ordered the mexican herb garden!

Step2 5A0100 Garden Kneeler Reviews

I bought this last Christmas for my In-laws…….they love it. They are avid gardners and my Father-in-law had trouble getting up and found the handle great for supporting him when getting up. My Mother-in-law loved the cushion for her knees, she said it was just perfect and the height was wonderful. So this year I will be purchasing two more for other gardners in our family!

Because of bad knees and because she is a larger lady, my mom has trouble getting up when she is doing weeding. I was concerned that the kneeler might not be wide enough for her to kneel on, but she said that it’s really great and that she’s very pleased with it. She said that it will be great for doing floor cleaning, too. I definitely recommend it, especially for people who have trouble getting up from being on their knees working on things.

Gaia’s Garden, Second Edition: A Guide To Home-Scale Permaculture
The first edition of Gaia’s Garden, sparked the imagination of America’s home gardeners, introducing permaculture’s central message: Working with Nature, not against her, results in more beautiful, abundant, and forgiving gardens. This extensively revised and expanded second edition broadens the reach and depth of the permaculture approach for urban and suburban growers. Many people mistakenly think that ecological gardening which involves growing a wide range of edible and other useful plants can take place only on a large, multiacre scale. As Hemenway demonstrates, it’s fun and easy to create a “backyard ecosystem” by assembling communities of plants that can work cooperatively and perform a variety of functions, including: Building and maintaining soil fertility and structure Catching and conserving water in the landscape Providing habitat for beneficial insects, birds, and animals Growing an edible “forest” that yields seasonal fruits, nuts, and other foodsThis revised and updated edition also features a new chapter on urban permaculture, designed especially for people in cities and suburbs who have very limited growing space. Whatever size yard or garden you have to work with, you can apply basic permaculture principles to make it more diverse, more natural, more productive, and more beautiful. Best of all, once it’s established, an ecological garden will reduce or eliminate most of the backbreaking work that’s needed to maintain the typical lawn and garden.

Gaia’s Garden, Second Edition: A Guide To Home-Scale Permaculture Reviews

What I really love about this book is how much Mr. Hemenway goes into the *reasons* that these methods work. Call me obsessive, but I like authors to provide a good reason their techniques work and not just say “OMG, look at this harvest, just do exactly what I do!” Mr. Hememway gives us beautiful, well-though out tables of different nutrients certain plants accumulate, what kinds of bugs they attract, plants that can tolerate drought or provide mulch on the spot, plants that have “spiky” roots that break up tough top-soil and plants that can provide structure or shade to other plants. It’s about using the attributes of different vegetation to do the work for you in a way that doesn’t adversely impact the land. Armed with this information, you can create your own “guilds” and areas of companion plants that work best for your location. Outside of a textbook, this is the most complete information on gardening I have ever come across. The author even presents the downsides of the methods in, what I feel, is a very even-handed manner. No one style fits every need and Mr. Hemenway addresses that. This is my favorite gardening book, period.

This book is a wealth of information. It teaches how to design and grow a home garden using permaculture and ecological gardening techniques. These techniques are designed to minimize input regarding fertilizers, pesticides and time, by imitating nature. Nature shows us that many different species of plants perform better together than one species. In permaculture each plant has more than one purpose. Not only will the plant provide food, but it may also shade another plant or attract beneficial insects. In Gaia’s Garden you’ll learn how to implement these ideas to create your own sustainable food forest.

Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book (Better Homes & Gardens Plaid) Reviews

You need a basic cookbook. This is it.
No frills. No essays about the enduring history of kumquats, and how they saved Milwaukee 1,000 years ago. None of that. Just a cookbook with lots of helpful tips, to be used by ordinary people.
What do you get? A good old fashioned cookbook filled recipes you’ll actually use, with ingredients you’ve seen before.
From this cookbook, I’ve made yeast donuts, breads, BBQ ribs, various sauces, and more. My copy has a few stains on it; good eating makes small messes. I like to think of the stains as battle scars.
Buy if you can the ring-bound version, as it will nicely open as you cook. I have the paperback edition, and use a bag of sugar to keep it open (place the sugar at the top of the open spine).
Helpfully included are photos of meat cuts, so you know pork ribs from beef ribs. There is a similar chart of grains and pastas.
Also, there are general instructions for preparing fruit-pie fillings, methods for cooking meat, and how to can produce. There’s shopping tips, nutritional charts, measuring techniques.
Ever wonder the difference between cubing and dicing is? That, and many more great tips are explained here.
I fully recommend “Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book” for any basic kitchen cooking need you have. However, I am sorry, but detailed kumquat information will need to be found elsewhere.

If I had to cut my extensive (over fifty) cookbook collection back to just one book this would be the “keeper!” When my beloved twelve-year old copy of this cookbook finally fell apart I purchased the 11th edition thinking I would mostly be replacing what I already had and knew well. There was so much new and useful information included in the eleventh edition I wished I’d let go of my old copy earlier. I am especially fond of the nutrition analysis included with each recipe and the tips for making recipes lower in fat. The prep-times included with each recipe were also a new, and very useful, feature to me. Plus the editors upgraded the book to reflect the wider availability of formerly “exotic” fruits and vegetables now in the everyday market. The fledgling cook will find everything needed to confidently accomplish any task from hard-boiling an egg to properly setting the table for a family meal or a buffet-style party. Pesky, but common, cooking terms like “al dente” and “crisp-tender” are explained in a straight forward manner in the cooking basics section where you will also find great tips for stocking a pantry or purchasing the basic cooking equipment you might need when just starting out. Useful features for all levels of cook are scattered throughout the text. For example, there is a full-page photograph of different pastas with the name under each (finally! I now know the difference between Gemelli and Fusilli!). Also very useful are the extensive illustrative photos of retail cuts of meat cross-referenced to the wholesale cut and listing the best way to cook each cut.One of my favorite things about the hardcover cookbook is the three-ring binder format. This makes it possible to lay the book flat on the counter or prop it up nearby with, or without, a cookbook stand. It also makes it easier to add your own notes right alongside your favorite recipes.I love to give this cookbook as a gift to a young person just starting out — inside a big crockpot or tied together with some fun kitchen tools.
